What do you remember most about Grandpa Dewey?

We'll start with an easy question, because most of us remember Grandpa. For those who didn't get to know him, you can learn about him from these memories and ask questions.

I didn't get to see Grandpa very often, because we lived in Massachusetts, so we were far away. It was always fun when Grandpa visited.
I remember that because he was missing fingers, Grandpa shuffled cards at a 90 degree angle to most people - long sides together instead of short sides.
I also remember him visiting when I was 10 or 11. My bedroom was on the groundfloor of the house, so was also the guest room, while I moved to a different bedroom. When he left after this particular visit, he forgot his glass eye and left it on my dresser. I have never liked going into ocularist offices and glass eyes kind of freak me out.
Other than that, I just remember Grandpa playing with us and we had a lot of fun when he was around.

I remember that Grandpa would always have me sneak him cookies right before dinner and mom would get so mad at both of us, and him and I would giggle while we ate the cookies.

I also remember summer days sitting in a lawn chair under a big maple tree in the front yard of our house listening to a ballgame on the radio with grandpa. He always loved a good ballgame.

The last memory is when in Utah for a family reunion, I was probably 4 years old, a bunch of the kids piled into the back of that camper to drive to a campground for the reunion and how cool it was to be riding in the camper with cousins.

Grandpa Loved his family and he loved his ball games.
Most of my memories of Grandpa surrounded his visits to Massachusetts. He would come every couple of years and spend a month or more.
Grandpa loved a good Ball game. I don't know if he had a favorite team, I think he just loved the game in general. When there was a televised game Grandpa would watch it and we were not allowed to bother him. I remember sitting quietly under the table playing with my dolls and watching the game with Grandpa.
Other nights he would sit outside after supper and play with us. Some of the games I remember were Cops & Robbers, Cowboys & Indians or Mumblypeg.
We lived about a mile from town on a busy street with no sidewalks. The only time I was allowed to walk uptown was when Grandpa was visiting, I always looked forward to spending time with grandpa and visiting the soda fountain and O'Briens 5 and 10.
Grandpa hated to feel like a burden and always insisted in helping out with groceries. He would always buy Soda Pop, which was a treat for us, since Mom & Dad rarely bought it.
Whenever I talked to Grandpa on the phone he called me MurryAnn and wanted to know if i was married yet and why not.
My last memory of Grandpa was in 1980 when I was at USU. He was staying at Uncle Ross' house. I went up to see him and say goodbye before I left for summer break. He walked into the room and asked who I was. I explained I was his granddaughter Mary and I was leaving to go to Massachusetts for the Summer. He told me his daughter lived there and I should look her up while I was at home.

Well, I guess we were lucky because we got to spend a lot of time with Grampa Dewey. I remember the days that he and Uncle George lived together in their camper either parked in our driveway or in a little trailer park. I remember often taking walks with him and chatting about incidental things. I remember telling him that he would live forever because I never wanted him to leave. We always had to wait to open our presents on Christmas morning until Grampa was awake and in the room. He was always a good sport and never complained about how early we got him up. I remember him being good-natured and always had a good laugh at a good joke. He liked to tease us. He loved to play cards with us. He always helped out wherever he could. One of my earliest memories was going to his house when I was 5 yrs old and begging him to let me wash his dishes. He pulled a stool up for me and I had a blast washing his dishes for him. I also remember sitting in his pea patch eating raw peas when I was quite small, maybe 2 yrs or so. And, crashing his car when my mom was pregnant with Doug, sitting on the roof as it had flipped over and waiting for help to come. I remember seeing his eye and his teeth in his cups and thinking they were weird. He loved to pop them all out on us at the same time to make us jump. He would laugh and laugh at that. I always wished I had known him in his younger days, as he was always very old to me. But, when I think about it, we had some fun times. I remember him and Uncle George going for a motorcycle ride on the back of my dad's bike when I was around 8 or so. I thought they were the coolest old men I had ever seen! lol My last memory was taking my new little baby Erik and 2yo Kendall to visit him in the nursing home. He really didn't know who we were, but seeing those boys made him smile and perk up. He sure loved the kids!
